This thistle is usually a winter annual or biennial herb that rarely flowers its first year. Its stem is erect, usually branched with spiny wings. It will usually grow to 9-10 feet tall. This thistle is native to Europe but spread rapidly through the U.S. and Canada when introduced. It can be found in waste areas that have chalky or limestone soils. The down of this plant has been used as material in making paper.
